Mondo’s Farewell

Hey everyone, it’s been a rather eventful two years hosting the podcast alongside Matt. From our humble beginnings as just a mere joke at Fest 9 to becoming the D List punk rock celebrity podcast duo that we are to day it’s been a thrill ride to say the least. It’s been an honor and a privilege to say the least to be able to host such a successful show alongside Matt these past two years and interview all the bands that we have.

Thus it comes with a bit of remorse to announce that I am leaving the podcast. It’s a decision I thought long and hard about and ultimately decided it was best I take my exit. No ill will against Matt but to keep things brief, my heart just isn’t in it anymore. So rather than have the podcast become a burden and let the quality of the episodes decline on my behalf I am exiting gracefully on a high note, allowing Matt to handle the franchise on his own.

That’s not to say I’ll never come back but for the foreseeable future I don’t see the podcast as being a part of my life but who knows, that could change. Maybe in a year or so, if Matt hasn’t cashed in and moved to the big leagues, I’ll come back and we’ll go on an original line up tour like Taking Back Sunday. Or maybe I won’t care. I’m not really sure. If Bomb the Music Industry can be ambiguous about their future so can I.

Anywho, I just want to thank each and everyone of you for your help and support these past few years. To any press person who set up an interview, every person who downloaded and listened to an episode, each band that took time out of their schedule to do an interview before or after a show, to every venue that ever let us use their space, and every band who was willing to play one of our shows. Most importantly I want to thank each and every friend who helped make the podcast what it is today and to every friend I made from the podcast. It’s been real and you know where to find me!
Take Care Everyone.

Favorite Comics of 2011

1.Li’l Depressed Boy (Image)- hands down my favorite discovery of the year, a comic book for the hopeless romantic who also happens to be a music nerd.

2.Animal Man (DC)- Out of all the titles in the new 52 Animal Man is easily my favorite. The artwork is amazing and the story freaks me out in the best way possible.

3.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)-I’ve been a TMNT fan before I could even walk or talk so it’s no surprise that this is one of my favorites this year. It’s a different take on the turtles but I love it. Not to mention Kevin is on board, so what’s not to like?

4.Daredevil (Marvel)- The relaunched Daredevil is easily my favorite Marvel comic at the moment. It’s got an old school vibe that I greatly enjoy. Not to mention the artwork is absolutely amazing.

5.Batwoman (DC)- The comic that took forever and a day to come out. Well it was worth the wait!

6.Ultimate Spider-Man (Marvel)-The idea of Miles Morales becoming the new Spider-Man excited me. After reading the first story arc I can’t wait to see what Marvel has planned for this book.

7.Kick Ass 2 (Icon)-Probably the most action packed comic of the year. Perhaps the most fucked up as well. If you want to know what I am talking about then read it.

8.Avengers  Academy (Marvel)- Perhaps the most underrated Marvel book at the moment and my favorite Avengers book. Avengers Academy partially fills the void in my heart that used to be filled by the Runaways.

9.Batgirl(DC)- Hands down one of the most controversial comics of the year. It saw the return of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl-I personally was against the idea but after reading it I could see Gail Simone handled the situation very well. I still have some reservations about the move but that is a discussion for another time.

10.Generation Hope (Marvel)-Perhaps my favorite new Marvel character. Hope is a young, strong willed red head. Not to mention she’s kind of a bad ass. I can’t get enough of this comic!

I could write about favorite shows, moments, movies, etc but I’ll be honest. I don’t have the time. So hopefully you enjoyed my extremely short little post and go check out Matt’s more detailed one.

And here is a thank you list( basically Mat’s list with a few more names,

My Top Ten Must See Bands at Fest 10

The week of Fest 10 is finally upon us! In 4 days one of the biggest punk rock festivals will go down and I decided to write about some bands you should check out  at Fest. Here I have compiled the ten bands that I HAVE to see this year at Fest 10. It was hard narrowing down my long list of bands to the ten that there are no way I can miss. Hopefully I will see most of you at each of these sets throughout the weekend.

10.Great Cynics- playing the Atlantic on Saturday at 9:20

I was recently introduced to this band by a good friend of mine by the name of Anthony Barlow. If you enjoy disappointing podcasts and videos about Chuck Ragan fishing you might have heard of him. Anywho, Great Cynics have easily become my favorite new music discovery this year. Their album “Don’t Need Much” has been in heavy rotation for months in my car stereo and  I can’t wait to finally see these songs played live. The band is from the UK so touring out in the U.S. isn’t something that happens very often. Thus, I have to see them Fest or risk not not being able to see them anytime in the near future.

9. Hot Water Music-playing the Florida Theater on Friday at 11:25

Hot Water Music is probably number 1 on most people’s list and as much as I do want to see them they aren’t the band I want to see the most. This has to do with the fact that I’ve seen them about 6 times already, the most recent time being in May at Krazy Fest. So while they aren’t my biggest priority, I would be a fool to miss Hot Water Music play in Gainesville. Though I have to be honest, I’m actually missing the first half of their set to see P.S. Eliot play. But seeing half a set is better than not seeing them at all!

8.The Gateway District- playing Durty Nelly’s on Friday at 6:20

The Gateway District has put put out one of my favorite records this year and I have yet to see them play live. They toured through California recently but unfortunately I was unable to catch them play while they were in town so I have to make up for this by seeing them at Fest. For those of you who don’t know the band is made up of members of the Soviettes, Banner Pilot, and Off With Their Heads. They’re one of the better punk rock “superbands” currently in the scene in my opinion and from what I’ve been told by friends is that they slay live.

7.None More Black- playing the Florida Theater on Saturday at 7:30

I’ve never seen None More Black but I’ve listened to This Is Satire more times than I can count. So of course I am going to see them play at the Fest. The band doesn’t really tour that often and when they do it’s not on the west coast. With no serious touring plans in the foreseeable future this probably going to be my only chance to see them for a very long time.

6.The Soviettes-playing 8 Seconds on Saturday at 1:30

The last time I saw the Soviettes was on the Fat Wreck tour in 2005. The line up that year consisted of Against Me, Smoke or Fire, The Soviettes, and The Epoxies. It was perhaps one of the greatest shows I had ever been to and the Soviettes set is one I will never forget. Not too long after that the band called it quits and I was heartbroken. Then in 2010 the band decided to reunite with Mikey Erg on drums and my heart was mended! They were set to play Fest 9 and I was determined to catch them. I didn’t. They were the first band playing the Atlantic, something that made no sense to me. They were playing a venue they could fill 3 times over so by the time I got there the venue had a line so long I knew I wasn’t getting in to see them. I was crushed. Luckily, they are back for Fest 10 and playing the 8 Seconds club which means I will be seeing them for sure this time around.

5. Armalite- playing 8 Seconds on Saturday at 2:20

Armalite is one of those bands who won’t ever tour and the only show they will ever really play, when they decided to actually play a show, is the Fest. So with that being said you shouldn’t pass up your chance to see these guys as you probably won’t get another chance for a couple of years. Fest will be my first time seeing them but everyone who has seen them has told me I will have my face melted off. If you’re still not convinced you should see them then perhaps the fact that both Dan Yemin and Atom Goren are in this band will sway you.

4  Grown Ups- playing Bar 1982 on Friday at 9:40

If you know me then you know I have been ranting and raving about this band since Fest 9.  Well since then they’ve put out an EP that’s only caused me to talk about how much I love them even more. So it’s no surprise that they are a must see band for me at Fest. Even if I have to walk out of a Kid Dynamite set a little bit early to see them. For most of you I know that sounds like blasphemy but considering I just saw Kid Dynamite twice last month i feel I can skip ten minutes of their set to support a smaller band like Grown Ups. So if you want to see me stage dive about 20 times in one set, head over to 1982 when they take the stage and you will not be disappointed!

3. Against Me- playing the Florida Theater on Saturday at 12:30(am)

Against Me has become one of my favorite bands over the course of the past ten years and there is no way I would pass the chance to see them play in their hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Having seen them over 20 times I already know they deliver a powerful life show and aren’t known to disappoint. On top of this being a hometown show for Against Me, this is also their first time playing the Fest since Fest 3. So there is bound to be a surprise or two during their set.

 2. The Measure(SA)- playing 8 Seconds on Sunday at 7:50

This is the Measure’s last set ever and you can bet I will be there. In the past 2 years this band has easily become one of my favorites, so to see them call it quits breaks my heart. The news was even more devastating considering they had just released a brand new record! So come their final song you can expect to see me in the pit with a fist in the air and a tear in my eye screaming out lyrics until my voice is gone.

1. P.S. Eliot- playing the Atlantic on Friday at 11:10

Hands down, P.S. Eliot if THE band I cannot miss this year. The band is calling it quits in a few months and Fest 10 will be my last chance to see them play one more time. Unless you live in New York you’re essentially in the same boat as myself. The band was able to create a perfect blend of punk rock & indie pop while still maintaining a high level of energy both on recording and in their live shows. There is no way I can miss the last chance to dance my ass off to this band and believe me, I WILL be dancing the whole set.

Food at Fest 10 for Vegans

The Fest in Gainesville is almost upon us and I’m here to help out some of my fellow vegans eat the best food the college town has to offer. Being a three-peat fester I’ve had the chance to dine at most of Gainesvilles vegetarian and vegan friendly establishments so for all first time festers, here is a little cheat sheet. Just a heads up though, these are not the only places where one can find delicious vegan food in Gainesville just the ones I enjoy the most.

Reggae Shack Cafe:

First on my list is the infamous Reggae Shack Cafe. It is hands down my favorite place to eat in Gainesville. Who can resist delicious Jamaican food and a great selection of reggae playing in the background? I know I can’t!

Reggae Shack Cafe’s Menu includes a full vegetarian menu where  all of the items on the menu are vegan as well. My personal recommendation is to get either the spicy tempeh with a side of festivals( fried cornbread) or the jerk veggie burger with a side of Dutty Fries. Normally I wouldn’t recommend getting a veggie burger but theirs is one you have to try, especially if you love spicy food.

The portions here will definitely fill you up, especially if you’re ordering a full dish as each one comes with steamed cabbage, rice & peas, and plantains. So expect to leave full if you hit up reggae shack.

Boca Fiesta:

If you’re a fan of Against Me then you definitely know this place as the owner is their former drummer Warren Oakes. Well for you hungry vegans who like to have a good meal and have a few drinks, this is the place to be.

On top of a menu that caters to both vegetarians and vegans Boca Fiesta also has a full bar. I fully back ordering a margarita with any meal as it will be the best one you can find in all of Gainesville. If you’re not a drinker then go for the limeade,  you will not be disappointed.

If you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck my personal suggestions is to go with the veggie meal deal. You get your choice of tortilla and protein as well as 2 sides to go with your meal. A Tempeh or TVP burrito with collards and corn on the cob is what I would more than likely order. Though, if you’re vegan specify this when ordering as both the TVP and the tempeh normally come with dairy.

Leonardo’s by the slice:

Leonardo’s vegan menu isn’t the hugest around, especially not compared to Boca Fiesta or Reggae Shack. However it makes up for that by providing some really delicious and pretty cheap options to dine on. Not to mention it is right across the street from the Holiday Inn meaning you can pick up some food either before or after you register without having to go far at all.

If you’re looking for a snack then to much on while you’re in line for registration you should go with an order of half dozen rolls. Less than $3 bucks and totally filling. They even come with two dipping sauces, though be warned that one of them is not vegan. I usually just tell them to double up on the marinara dipping sauce and I’m a happy camper.

If you really want to fill up though then I suggest either getting the pasta marinara, sans the cheese of course, or the vegan slice. I personally would go with the latter only because I love pizza like nobodies business.

Also, if you’re just vegetarian and not vegan they have a several different veggie friendly calzones that you should try out as well.

Karma Cream:

Karma Cream is perhaps the most vegan friendly place on the list as the entire menu is either vegetarian or vegan friendly. Not only that but everything on the menu is also organic and fair trade!

They boast 25 different vegan flavors of ice cream, a plethora of all vegan baked goods & candy bars, various coffee & tea drinks and a nice selection of delicious sandwiches. Whether you’re going for a nice little treat or a full on meal you will leave satisfied.

What I personally recommend if you’re looking for something that is both sweet and filling is the banana fluffernutter. Its a peanut butter, banana, and ricemallow(vegan marshmallow) sandwich.

However, if you’re not in the mood for something sweet I suggest the tofurkey reuben sandwich. It will not disappoint, especially if you love sauerkraut!

This is just a small list of all the delicious vegan food that Gainesville has to offer and hopefully while you’re festing this year you take some time to try as much of it as you can. It’s definitely something I make time for every fest because I can only eat some of these amazing dishes once a year.  So while you’re scheduling bands for the day be sure to schedule some eating breaks as well!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Issue #1 Review

Three weeks ago IDW released the first issue of a very brand new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book and upon reading it I was pleasantly surprised to know that it was a brand new storyline entirely. Of course you have the basic elements and characters that are the same. However, outside of that not much else is familiar.

The issue starts off very quickly with a fight ready to take place on the first page and right away you’ll notice that Dan Duncan and Ronda Pattison did an amazing job on art and colors. The story then shifts focus away from the present in order to give us a bit of a glimpse of the origin of the turtles but still leaves much to be answered before returning to the present. We are however introduced to April O Neil and Baxter Stockman as well as the infamous Krang in this flashback. The book itself ends with Raphael coming to the aid of a young Casey Jones caught in the midst of a case of domestic violence.

The first issue itself was a great launch to the series and definitely sure to please Ninja Turtles fans old and young alike. To be quite honest when I heard that this comic was in production it instantly became my most anticipated comic of the year. So when I got the first issue I was a bit nervous that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations, I almost was afraid to read it. However, that was not the case as my expectations were greatly exceeded. The writing does contain darker elements akin to the original comics which I loved. Though, it isn’t as gritty as the turtles of yesteryear as the comic does need to appeal to a younger audience. Even with this factor in mind Duncan and Eastman were still able to find a healthy balance to set the tone of the comic to appease all demographics. Though I wonder how they will handle deaths in future story lines considering at the beginning of the comic Splinter reminds the turtles not to kill anyone. Overall I would recommend you to pick up the book if you can.

9.5/10

Mondo has a residency at the Song Journal!

Hey everyone, I just started the second half of my month long residency at the Song Journal. The Song Journal is a blog on tumblr where the person who is running it for the given month picks a song every day and writes about how that song relates to how their day went. It’s pretty fun and I like that I am actually doing some blogging again. It helps me to relieve some stress and be more positive in my day to day life. You can check out the song journal by clicking here.
